Fun activities for the holiday

Fun activities for the holiday

During the holidays keeping everyone entertained and happy is a challenge, especially when you have younger children. Luckily, Born Furniture has put together a list of fun activities to keep everyone in the house entertained.

Everyone loves good food and that is why we suggest baking cupcakes/cookies and decorating them with the help of your children. In addition, homemade pizza is always a winner for everyone. Other activities in the house include; building a tent using blankets and cushions or building an obstacle course.

Furthermore, on a lovely day spend it outside. Have fun building an obstacle course, go for a swim or have a backyard picnic. Another alternative is to play games like cat and mouse, tag, what’s the time Mr. Wolf, thief, stuck in the mud.  Any of your favourite games will be fun for all age groups.

Similarly, arts and crafts are always fun for the little ones. Spend some time coloring in or painting picture. Learn a new skill like pottery, art, rock art climbing or drama at a place near you. Another way to get the creative juices flowing is by making masks, let the children’s imaginations run wild by making masks of their favourite superhero or animal, whatever they want to.

Moreover, go out and about, visit a museum, go see a new movie. Another favourite amongst children is fruit picking, and going to a farm or market. Go visit a theme park and enjoy the thrilling rides.

At night time make dinner together as a family, your children will love the experience. Have a movie marathon with buckets filled with popcorn and candy. Luckily, Disney movies are wonderful for the entire family. How about changing things up a bit and get behind the camera? Make your own family movie, the children will enjoy the roleplay and dressing up. Another favourite is a trivia night, choose different topics and fill your space with the laughter of your family enjoying the time together.

Other activities you can do is to play board or card games like Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, Snap, Uno etc. Have a themed day like pirates or princesses, dress up and roleplay for the day. Invite friends over to enjoy the fun. A slumber party is another fabulous choice, invite friends over pitch indoor tents and play party games, what a wonderful way to spend the night.

These are only a few ideas to entertain your family over the holiday. How do you keep your family busy over the holidays?

not so traditional christmas tree

The not so traditional Christmas tree

The not so traditional Christmas tree

Christmas is around the corner and decorating your home is part of the Christmas tradition. However this year Born Furniture suggests that you should go for the not so traditional Christmas tree. That is why we have put together a few ideas for you to try.

Everyone has a Christmas tree packed away in a box only to be opened once a year.  Instead of using your packed away Christmas tree rather use a step ladder. Yes, we do mean the one that is somewhere in the garage! You can be creative, paint the ladder with joyful colours and brighten it up by using colourful Christmas lights. Another option is to use your Christmas ornaments and other decorations to decorate the ladder.

Furthermore, if you are a bit stressed about time head down to your local crafts store and get yourself a beautiful Christmas tree wall sticker. In addition, the stickers can be placed on almost any wall and it comes off without any trouble. There is a variety of colours and designs to choose from so finding the right, not so traditional tree will be quite easy.

Another wonderful idea is to have a Christmas tree made from wood. Wood is a very versatile product and can be used in endless amounts of ways. Most noteworthy, the wood can be painted and combined with matching colour decorations for a modern Christmas look. Alternatively, to create a more natural look you can leave the wood untreated. Wood alone creates a lovely ambience of warmth in any space, combined with the Christmas spirit it will create a magnificent atmosphere.

Lastly, as we are in summer and the flowers are in full bloom we thought a floral Christmas tree will be perfect. Use the gifts mother nature gives you. Like a tree full of colourful flowers creates a summer ambience in your space and it will leave your space smelling lovely.

There are so many alternatives for the original Christmas tree, these are just a few of our favourites. Tell us what you think and share your unique Christmas ideas with us for the jolly season.

Balance between your Work and Family life as a Woman – a couple of tips from Born Furniture

Balancing your Work and Family life as a Woman – a couple of tips from Born Furniture

At Born Furniture we celebrate women during the month of August. Because we care we also know that finding a balance between work and family can be a challenge. So we decided to give you a couple of tips and tricks.

This is something that most of us find difficult, however it is an achievable concept. If you do meet someone who has it all figured out, chances are they will be back at it again in a year’s time. Trying to schedule an equal number of hours for each of your various work and personal activities is usually unrewarding and unrealistic. You need to work hard in order to achieve your personal and/or family goals. The one cannot survive without the other. You cannot get the full value from life without BOTH Achievement and Enjoyment.

The right balance for you when you are single will be different when you marry, or if you have children. It will also be difficult when you start a new career versus when you are nearing retirement. Our work and family circumstances vary significantly. Personal, family and work needs vary and are ever-changing, so you have to be more flexible. Being a full-time working parent can lead to feelings of guilt and stress because of divided attention between work and family.

The key is to develop creative solutions as you approach the challenges of balancing the responsibilities and joys of your many roles. Work life balance is something most parents really crave. Recent surveys reveal that many parents are eager to make changes so they can work more flexibly, even if it affects their pay. They do this because they know that having time with their children is important. This leaves us with the question; What can we do to attain the best possible from both worlds? Unfortunately, there is no formula to make this easier. Furthermore, your hierarchy of values will change as you move through the different phases of your life. These are merely guidelines and will make you feel better one way or another by practicing different ideas as well as thought processes.

Write down your hierarchy of values: Write down your values, from the highest to the lowest. This will enable you to see what is most important and least important to you. This will turn your focus towards certain values or show your weakness and where you should improve. For example, is your friends and/or your PlayStation more important than your family or your business. Woman and men’s values will vary as we are built differently. Limit time-wasting activities and people.

Meditate and create time for yourself: Being a good parent, partner and professional means being good to yourself first. Most of the time, when faced with challenging situations, the difficulty is in thinking what will I do. Also comparing it with past experiences or comparing it with other’s experiences. Don’t, these are the hurdles that we create for ourselves. Life is too complicated to be a perfectionist. We are all human and do not own Super Man’s genes. Meditate often (calming your mind) and revisit your written hierarchy of values.

Make one night your special night (If you have children and/or only married.) Movie night, Lego night or computer game night. Whatever they fancy. Few moms and dads can join in with their children’s post-school fun and games every evening. However, your children will love to know that there’s one night when everything stops, just for them.

Achieve an Integrated life: Keep things in perspective. Create harmony in your life, a mixture of work, family and friends. Remember there is no single formula for balancing work and family. It is a personal decision how one combines your spouse, children and career. Remember to divide your time. All of these different masks that we wear require a certain amount of attention. It is up to you to get to know what is more important than the other and make it work.

What does your office furniture say

What does your office furniture say about your Company

The type of office furniture you choose says a lot about your company’s culture and values. Your office is your home away from home. Potential clients will be able to assess your business just by walking in the door. Therefore, you want to make sure what they’re seeing accurately reflects your company’s culture. It’s the place where you fight for market share, pursue new business opportunities, and realize your dreams. Experts often tell people to dress for the job they want and not the job they have, this is also especially relevant to office furniture. Startup companies that bring in new furnishings, accessories and decorations make a name for themselves.

Those companies tell their clients that they have enough capital to purchase new things for the office. It’s also, for better or for worse, part of the public face of your company. As a result, the most productive offices typically balance the comforts of home with a professional business image. But does your office live up to this goal? Do employees spend a lot of time working at their desks or are they out and about for most of the workday? Your Space can be transformed into a place where clients will happily part with their money for your goods. Additionally also cause them to question your existence and expertise.  Here are some things to keep in mind about your office furniture.

Colour

Bright colours indicate that this is a place where collaboration and creativity are king. As a result employees are encouraged to work together instead of alone at their desks all day. Low-wavelength colours, like restful green and calming blue -two of the most common colours in Mother Nature’s palette — improve efficiency and focus. They also lend an overall sense of well-being.

Controversially, Red, a high-wavelength colour, is active, intense and alarming at times. The passion-inspiring colour, not accidentally the hue of valentines, fire extinguishers and fire trucks, increases the heart rate and blood flow upon sight. That said, if there’s something in the office you want to urgently draw employees’ eyes to, it’s best to paint it red.

Meanwhile mellow yellow, often viewed by colour psychologists as the shade of optimism, is energetic and fresh. It is believed to trigger innovation and is best used in work environments where artists, writers, designers, developers and other creative professionals work.

Desks

Desks are a sign that employees are static most of the day and work alone. Which can be further indicated by the amount of storage available to them in their cubicles or in their offices (depending on the set-up of your actual space). Work stations instead of traditional desks indicate that employees are mobile and use their laptops when necessary by plugging in to any work station instead of staying at one desk.

Layout

So maybe you like the look of traditional desks even though your employees do collaborate together and aren’t necessarily chained to their computers from 8-5. The lay out of your office furniture will be the best indicator for how your office operates. This is where an expert eye can come in handy to give you the furniture style you want and still portray your company’s core values and culture.

Office Feng Shui by Born Furniture

Office Feng Shui

Born Furniture introducing Feng Shui as a tool for ideal flow in your office.

Life has sure changed since the early century where taking work home was not heard of. Nor was working until 10pm at the office part of a normal weekday. During the past few decades, technology, cultural sensitivity and a whole host of legalities have transformed the workplace. Beginning with the women’s movement in the 1970s, the workplace has shifted from one dominated by older white males to a more multicultural community. Notably, women, minorities, the handicapped and younger workers now share the workplace at all levels. This has most definitely exposed our ambitions but it has not made it easier. We are juggling many balls and wearing many different masks at home and at the office.

Feng shui for our office is as important as the feng shui for our bedroom. As a matter of fact our office is our second home. In addition we should spend time equipping our offices better by creating a calming and protective atmosphere. You can do so by arranging your personal office or cubicle according to the tenets of Feng Shui to get the most possible work done with the least amount of stress and frustration.

The ideal office is a room of your own with a regular shape preferably a square or rectangle. Furthermore, natural lighting (at least one window), a solid door you can close, and a good position for your desk is also ideal. One of the great advantages of having your own office is that you can usually perform more decorative Feng Shui adjustments than if you work in a cubicle. Of course, not every company can afford, or desires, to put every employee in his or her own individual space. Here are some tips to clear your office space:

Clear Clutter & Organize: One of the most fundamental steps in creating a feng shui office is to get rid of clutter. Clutter has a profound impact on your emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.

Ensure your desk is in the right position: In a feng shui office you want to make sure that you are sitting in the power position. Meaning that you can see the door when seated at your desk. Ideally, you should be able to see as much of the room as possible.

Use appropriate artwork and imagery: When you surround yourself with images and objects that you love and that inspire you, you create a living affirmation for your goals.

In a feng shui office you want to surround yourself with images and objects that keep you inspired, creative and productive. Add flowers, art and beautiful window treatments. Hang pictures, mottos and images that symbolize what you want to accomplish. Furthermore, choose furniture and accessories that speak to you of prosperity, abundance and success.

Incorporate stress relievers: Keep stress and irritability to a minimum by choosing furniture with rounded corners or positioning sharp corners out of traffic flow. Avoid harsh lighting or lots of glare since it can cause irritability and fatigue. Additionally, you can add music, running water or mist with essential oils to keep stress levels to a minimum.

However, these are only guidelines but will be a good start to a better and more creative working space. Please take into consideration that you will need to protect yourself from bad energies around the office too. One of the best ways to protect yourself from negative energy is to make sure you are filled with good energy. Make sure you don’t take on negative energy yourself. We look forward to hearing your comments after you have tried our tips on Office feng Shui.

Leather is not made, Leather is BORN

The History and Present day of Leather

Leather tanning is without a doubt one of the oldest human activities.  In the beginning, skins obtained from hunting and livestock breeding could be used for clothing or tents. The leathers became stiff at low temperatures, while they rotted with heat.  It was probably then that attempts were made to render them more flexible and stronger by rubbing in animal fats. Significantly, Assyrian text mentions the first rudimental tanning process.

Furthermore, in the fourteenth century, leather was being used in combination with wood in chairs, arm-chairs, and settles with craftsmanship that reached the levels of an art-form.  This was also the case later on with tapestries especially in Venice in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. With chests and cases, and of course, with book bindings, perhaps the most lasting and refined use of the material.  With regard to tanning techniques, it is more or less in the Middle Ages that the depilating action of quicklime was discovered. Hence, today this technique is still valid and normally used. A considerable improvement in processing techniques occurred in the 12th century, with no substantial changes to tanning systems.

This brings us to the present day where luxury and comfort is the norm and it is something that we create the need for. It is our reward for our very busy and productive lifestyles. Notably, leather has sure come along way. Creating the best possible space in our homes are imperative and with each purchase, quality must be inseparable from the actual handcrafted masterpiece. In this day and age, we need to ensure that the quality resonates the price. We ensure and guarantee the quality of our furniture. Born manufactures the largest range of 100% genuine leather Chesterfield Sofas in South Africa, each piece handcrafted in our factory.

The Born Leather Collection

We are proud to announce our very own signature range of leathers. Still 100% genuine leather skins, just tanned in a different way. The BORN leathers, is a special collection that we have designed with our trusted tannery Hannitan. We took inspiration from the England Chesterfield makers to design the leather to our liking and tailoring. The leather comes in red, blue, green, tan, brown, grey and black.

There are a variety of different leather types. To ensure quality it will be best to request either of the following leathers;

Full-grain leather refers to hides that hasn’t been sanded, buffed, or snuffed to remove imperfections (or natural marks) on the surface of the hide. The grain remains allowing the fiber strength and durability. The grain also has breathability, resulting in less moisture from prolonged contact. Rather than wearing out, it will develop a patina over time. High quality leather furniture and footwear is often made of full-grain leather. Full-grain leathers are typically available in two finish types: aniline and semi-aniline.

Top-grain leather or semi corrected leather (the most common type used in high-end leather products) is the second-highest quality. It has had the “split” layer separated away, making it thinner and more pliable than full-grain. Its surface has been sanded and a finish coat added to the surface which results in a colder, plastic feel with less breathability, and it will not develop a natural patina. Typically less expensive with greater resistance to stains than full-grain leather, as long as the finish remains unbroken.

Corrected-grain leather is any leather that has had an artificial grain applied to its surface. The hides used to create corrected leather do not meet the standards for use in creating vegetable-tanned or aniline leather. The imperfections are corrected or sanded off, and an artificial grain impressed into the surface and dressed with stain or dyes. Most corrected-grain leather is used to make pigmented leather as the solid pigment helps hide the corrections or imperfections. Corrected grain leathers can mainly be bought as two finish types: semi-aniline and pigmented.

Our high quality leather stems from the family owned tannery Hannitan since 1724. The Hanni family have dedicated themselves to an unbroken lineage in the leather trade of superior quality and craftsmanship. One of the cleanest and efficient tanneries in the world, Hannitan has expanded into the largest supplier of furniture leather in South Africa. The tannery produces a wide variety of upholstery leathers. These leathers include, aniline, semi-aniline, full grain, corrected grain, wax leathers, buffed leathers and oil pull-ups in a discoverable selection of colours.

If you would like to learn more about our signature leather range, we would be happy to talk you over a cup of coffee on one of our 100% genuine leather sofa’s.

Born Furniture De Lende

Born Chesterfield paired with a De Lende

Improving your space with a Born Chesterfield and De Lende

Furniture in the right colours and textures are always great to improve your space. However, finding a way to bring the room together can be a time consuming and not always a successful venture. Luckily, we are always on the lookout for something different to ensure opulence in your space. We at Born Furniture suggests a De Lende paired with your Chesterfield. One of De Lende’s fine-art photographs can take your room to the next level.

Born Furniture is proud to announce that we are collaborating with photographer Koos van der Lende to help you uplift your living space into something unusual. De Lende is a leading South African landscape fine art photographer. After completing his studies at the School of Photography in The Hague, Netherlands, he returned to Southern Africa where his passion for photography was born. Having spent the last 29 years devoted to his vision, he has now completely abandoned the studio for the outdoors where he spends most of his year photographing series of limited edition Fine Art Pieces also featured in sought after magazines. De Lende often gets commissioned by the South-African Post Office for their limited edition stamps.

Working from Pretoria, South Africa, he mostly shoots in panoramic format using the film and darkroom processing techniques. Typically, De Lende’s pictures blend natural and artificial lighting sources, with minimal intervention afterwards. The De Lende prints meet international art standards. Furthermore, these artworks are Giclée prints on fine-art paper to achieve superior archival quality.

By pairing a genuine Born furniture chesterfield sofa with a De Lende photograph you create an opulent visual experience in your space. After choosing your Chesterfield sofa, it is time to hand-pick your leather. We suggest a Timberland Rosewood skin or a full grain Whiskey Pull-up leather to compliment the hues in the art piece. If you feel a little more adventurous you can always go for a Midnight Ocean, Self healing Ruby Red or even a Born Forrest Green.

Another extraordinary piece to have in your midst, is De Lende’s coffee table book “Moments of Grace”. Moments of Grace is a majestic collection of De Lende’s photographs, documenting a decade of intimate work to unveil the secret landscapes of Africa. A perfect conversation starter amongst friends that also enjoy the finer things in life.

We have the “Mozambique, Niassa, Aloe, Mawii” De Lende photograph on display in our showroom. For viewing this fine art masterpiece, or if you’d like to talk to us about pairing it with one of our Chesterfield sofa’s. please feel free to contact us for an appointment.

Introducing Interior design services

Born Furniture specializes in 100% Genuine leather chesterfield sofas. We have the largest range of Chesterfield sofas in Africa. Our Chesterfield range is manufactured in 100% genuine leather. Alternatively, our range is also available in the finest fabrics. Our frames carry a lifetime guarantee and our signature foam a five-year warranty.

Born Furniture is excited to announce that we don’t only manufacture luxury furniture but have added interior design to our line of expertise. Our furniture is made to perfection and needs to be displayed in an opulent space. The correct interior design can enhance the mood in your living room. It also compliments your home’s unique personality by bringing out certain characteristics. Interior design plays a key role in the functionality of your building. It is the process of shaping the experience of interior space. When doing interior design, it is necessary to think of the house or business space as a totality. One needs to keep design elements in mind and ensure that these elements complement one another. Let me mention the different elements with a short description.

The different design elements that you have to keep in mind is; balance, rhythm, details and an ascendant focal point in your space. Balance is important for the equal distribution of visual weight in a room. A focal point must be dominant to draw attention. It must also be interesting enough to encourage the viewer to look further. Rhythm is defined as continuity, recurrence or organized movement. Lastly, everything is in the details from the trimming on the lampshade to choosing the correct lighting.

In my opinion, when it comes to design, colour is more important than any other element.  Taking a look at interior design trends, the colour trends at the moment are warm hues of pastel pinks paired with rose gold. A Barlow Chesterfield, master crafted in ballerina pink leather works really well. By adding a rose quartz or two, it can be a good addition to the texture and soulful energy in the room.

Seeing that Serenity blue is the pantone of the year we suggest a sand and blue color combination. Another combination you can try is the Strauss Chesterfield  in Gazelle Taupe Leather against a Royal Blue accent wall. Create an upbeat rhythm with some blue and grey scatter cushions with a voluptuous throw for the cold winter nights.

Born Furniture’s Chesterfield sofa collection are for the individuals with great taste. With so many different colours and types of leathers to choose from, the colour combinations for your space are endless.

Seats versus division

Sofa seats: Seats versus division

Sofa seats: Seats versus division

Many persons are in the dark when it comes to terms like a 2 seater sofa or a 2 division sofa. Here we are defining the furniture terms seats or divisions.

A 2 seater sofa or couch means it can easily sits 2 persons but can have only one cushion (1 Division)

A 3 seater sofa sits 3 persons with an average seat space of 550mm and bigger, and will have 3 cushions except if its stated as a 3 seater , 2 division sofa.

This means it can sits 3 persons but because of the style only have 2 larger cushions.

This is a 3 seater sofa but in 2 divisions.
