Black Forest trifle recipe

Black Forest trifle

A true Born Christmas is nothing without a delicious dessert. In South Africa, traditionally a trifle is made and something everyone looks forward too. This year we suggest you give it a bit of a twist like BBC Good Food did, a Black Forest trifle with enough chocolate for everyone. This scrumptious inspiration will be a delight for everyone and is sure to bring the festive cheer to your table.

Ingredients

500ml tub ready-made chilled custard – look for one with real vanilla seeds
100g plain chocolate, broken into pieces
400g chocolate brownies
2 x 390g jars cherries in kirsch or similar
300g tub double cream
200ml tub crème fraîche
25g icing sugar
grated chocolate, to decorate, and fresh cherries (optional)

Method

Put the custard into a pan with the chocolate pieces. Gently heat, stirring, until the chocolate has melted into the custard. Cover with cling film and cool.
Arrange the brownies in the base of a trifle bowl. Drain the jars of cherries, reserving the liquid, and scatter over the brownies. Drizzle over 100ml reserved liquid. Spoon the cooled chocolate custard over and chill while you make the topping.
Lightly whip the cream with the crème fraîche and icing sugar until soft peaks form. Chill until ready to serve, then pile on top of the trifle and decorate with grated chocolate and fresh cherries, if you like.

Rainbow Cake Recipe

Planning a Christmas dinner can be a hefty task, especially the dessert. Making something that everyone will enjoy might become daunting because everyone has their preferences. There is traditional foodies and then again you also want to spice things up a bit. We found our bold inspiration in the colours of the rainbow. A colourful delight this Christmas will be a Rainbow Cake. We found a scrumptuous recipe on BBC Good Food, it is sure to bring a bright and colorful delight to the table.

Ingredients

You’ll need 3 x these ingredients for six sponges

125g butter, softened, plus a little extra for greasing
225g plain flour
150g golden caster sugar
3 medium egg (very important to use the correct size)
1 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
edible food colouring – red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, plus optional pink (see below)

For the icing

1 tsp vanilla extract
3 x 250g tubs cream cheese or mascarpone
350g icing sugar

Method

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Grease 2 x 20cm round sandwich tins and line the bases with baking parchment. Tip all the sponge ingredients, apart from the food colouring, into a mixing bowl, then beat with an electric whisk until smooth.
Working quickly, weigh the mixture into another bowl to work out the total weight, then weigh exactly half the mixture back into the mixing bowl. Pick 2 of your colours and stir a little into each mix. Keep going until you are happy with the colour – the colour of the batter now will be very similar to the finished cake, so be brave! Scrape the different batters into the tins, trying to spread and smooth as much as possible – but try not to waste a drop of the batter – a rubber spatula will help you. Bake on the same oven shelf for 12 mins until a skewer poked into the middle comes out clean.
Gently turn the cakes out onto a wire rack to cool. Wash the tins and bowls thoroughly, and start again from step 1 – this time using another 2 colours. Unless you’re making the optional pink layer, repeat one more time to get 6 sponges, all of different colours. Leave them all to cool.
To make the icing, very briefly beat the vanilla and cream cheese or mascarpone with an electric whisk until smooth. Sift in the icing sugar and gently fold in with a spatula. Be careful – the more you work it, the runnier it will get, increasing the chance of splitting.
Smear a little icing on your cake stand or plate – just a splodge to stick the first sponge. Start with the red, then spread with some icing right to the very edge. Repeat, sandwiching on top the orange, yellow, green, blue and finally purple sponges. Spread the remaining icing thickly all over the sides and top of the cake.

Sugar Cookies Recipe

Sugar Cookies

This Christmas Santa won’t be the only one enjoying some sugar cookies! A true delight for everyone in the family and it is so easy to make with the kids as a holiday event. We at Born found this recipe on the Food Network and the results are delightful. These sugar cookies will be the perfect snack to enjoy around the Christmas tree with friends and family, whilst enjoying a festive movie.

Let’s dig in:

INGREDIENTS

1 cup butter or 1 cup margarine
1 cup sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 ³⁄₄cups flour

DIRECTIONS

Cream butter and sugar.
Add egg and vanilla.
Mix all dry ingredients and add slowly to buttercream mixture until incorporated.
Roll out on lightly floured board to desired thickness.
Cut out different shapes and bake at 200 degrees for 7- 10 minutes.
Should be light in color with light browning on the edges.

Creating the perfect Christmas dinner table

The food is ready, gifts are wrapped and the Christmas tree’s lights are sparkling. Everything is in place for a delightful Christmas, except for your table. Here are some ideas to bring the joy of Christmas to your dining table.

The traditional Christmas theme colours are green, red and white. You can use these colours to create the perfect combination. However, Born is having a rainbow inspired Christmas in light of the summer time.

Our perfect colourful Christmas dining table is as follows. Start with a white tablecloth, it creates a base to combine your colours effortlessly. The place-mats can be colourful with a variety of designs. Your plates should also be a neutral colour like for example white, place a side plate on top of your plate to create depth on your table. The glassware can be the different hues you choose for your table or your normal crystal glasses, both will create an opulent image. In addition, the cutlery you use can be anything from stainless steel to rosegold metallics.

Notably, the centrepiece will be the focal point of your Christmas dining table, be creative with the different colours. Use a vase and place different colour Christmas ornaments inside to create a Christmas ambiance, or another alternative is a small Christmas tree with colourful decorations. Furthermore, you can can also use colourful candles or flowers for a natural effect.

In addition to bring more colour to your table, colourful napkins are a lovely solution. Use different patterns, textures or designs are wonderful for a colourful Christmas tree. Add a small surprise for each guest to the table, place a colourful candy cane or chocolate on each set of place. Notably, a tradition around a Christmas table is the Christmas crackers, place crackers with colourful designs at each seat. This brightens the mood around the table, perfect for the summer time.
