Hue knew?

Colourful interior decor for your home

Changing the color of your interior decor can not only have an impact on how you feel about your home, but on its value, too. Choosing a combination of hues that’s beautiful and pleasing to the eye is an entirely different task altogether. If you’ve been stymied about what home decor colors to choose, consider some of our colour combinations.

We now everyone has a favourite colour, whether it’s nature-inspired blue, passionate purple or vibrant yellow. Furthermore, it is most likely that you have a tonal preference too. This can include anything from brights to muted or pastel hues. Whatever your interior style is, here are some ways in which you can use different colours.

Firstly, we suggest you use the colour blue. Blue ranks so high as a favorite colour that you won’t go wrong if you use this versatile colour. Furthermore, blue enhances the peaceful ambience of your space to create the perfect place to relax. A blue chesterfield is an excellent way to incorporate blue to your space. Therefore, we recommend a Mozart Chesterfield in our Signature Oceano Blue leather. Notably, when you combine blue with another colour it creates a more creative effect.

We also suggest different hues of yellow. Yellow is associated with happiness and positivity and will be a delightful colour to use for your home’s interior as it will add to you joyful ambience. However, using too much yellow in your interior is not a good idea. Therefore, rather use smaller pieces of furniture or small decorating items that will make the space feel fresh and inviting.

Perhaps best known as the colour of royalty, purple is truly significant! Purple can be a daunting colour to consider however, in all its hues it can be lovely and even sophisticated. Adding pops of purple hues in the form of furniture is a wonderful idea, we suggest a Born Wingback in our Royale Purple leather. Another way to add hues of purple is by using rugs, it can be used around the house without any effort.

Want a colourful, happy and full of energy space? We recommend using green for your home decor. The hue is the colour of live as it is associated with growth and rejuvenation. Incorporate the positive energy from green in your home with a Born Signature Emerald Green Leather sofa.

Color choices are highly subjective, and when it comes to decorating your home, you need to do what feels right to you. Similarly, it is just as important to choose the right colour combinations. As we discussed a peace enhancing blue, vibrant yellow, royal purple and lushes green we suggest that you pair these colours together. A space with natural hues of blue paired with yellow or green is a wonderful combination just as rich purple and green hues work perfectly together. Have a look at some of our colourful inspirations.

Born Furniture Wingback Interior

Where do Wingbacks come from?

The History of the Wingback chair

Timeless and modern, dramatic and refined yet elegant and majestic – the wingback chair has stood strong on its cabriole legs for hundreds of years.

But where did this design originate that we have come to love? Who was so creative to design this delicate yet regal piece? With a history as rich as it is captivating, the wingback chair has endured changes in material and styles over many years.

The history of the wingback chair starts in the 1600’s in England. Here the cold weather made the fireplace the gathering spot of the house, where families spend hours together. The Wingback chair came to live when the people designed a chair that could hold heat with the wings attached to a basic chair. Notably, the original purpose of this impressive furnishing was to keep the person seated, warm.

The Wingback chair gained popularity in 1720, the design was initially constructed from wood with flat, broad arms.

Born Furniture Wingbacks History of the wingback chair

Came the 18th-century, the wingback turned to comfort and began incorporating upholstery. At first only fabric was used, but leather soon gained popularity as well. Towards the 19th-century, the chairs were stuffed with horsehair for more padding. Bright patterns and ornate fabric embellishment was the way to go when upholstering a chair.

The Wingback chair’s style has changed over the years. Firstly, the French designed a bergère, an armchair with upholstered arms, back and frame. Designed for lounging in comfort with a deeper, wider seat, the bergère was more about function than form.

However, the French weren’t the only ones reinventing the wingback. During the 18th-century the well-known furniture maker George Hepplewhite lowered the seat in some of his designs. Furthermore, Chippendale of England, modeled the wingback design by adding elegant frames and the finest fabrics for upholstery. Wingback chairs were seen in castles and became pieces associated with the upper class and the elite.

Over the years the Wingback chair has made its way to our homes. Designed in all sizes, fabrics, patterns and styles to perfectly fit into our homes. The wingback chair remains a symbol of comfort and elegance in modern décor. The now more informal piece is perfect for home decor in your living room, office and libraries.

Why not explore our range of Wingbacks and bring this historic piece into your home.

Decorating with Greenery

Home decorating with the Pantone of the year: Greenery

The Pantone colour of the year is a significant element for any interior designer. As it happens Pantone has announced the 2017 colour of the year, this year we move away from the warming pastels to a zesty neon colour. Greenery is the colour of the year and we can’t express our excitement!

The colour is described by Pantone as a “fresh, yellowish hue that symbolises the reawakening of nature in spring and is a symbol for a new beginning.” However, there is a much deeper meaning to Greenery. It is a symbol of the rapidly increasing desire for a new hope in a complex social and political environment. Furthermore, it symbolises our growing desire for a renewed connection and unity with nature and our fellow human beings.
Using this zesty colour can be daunting however we are here to help you blend it into your home’s interior. Let’s have a look at some of the ways you can blend the colour into your interior.

Walls

Incorporating Greenery can easily be done by creating an accent wall. In whatever room you decided to create the accent wall it will be eye catching. The wall can either be painted or covered with wallpapers with patterns or just the new trendy shade.

A Greenery accent wall is a trendy way to make a statement

 Textiles

For those people that don’t want to make serious changes, you can incorporate greenery colour textiles to your decor. The bedding, blankets, curtains, scatter cushions, throws, rugs and upholstery will make your interior stylish and bold. However, the colour is very eye catching and using too much of it not a good idea. Less is more in this case. Born Furniture Home decor interior design interior decor pantone greenery

Different greenery coloured patterns are wonderful to make a bold statement

 Furniture

Furniture is another wonderful idea to incorporate Greenery in your home. With furniture you have a wide range of possible pieces and styles to choose from; chairs, sofas, ottomans and even headboards can be used. Use some accessories or artwork to echo with the bold colour furniture. A wonderful piece of furniture to incorporate in your home is the London Chesterfield Sofa. Master crafted to perfection and upholstered with 100% genuine leather the London in our Born Signature Green Leather is sure to add a touch of elegance to your space and it will create a marvelous focal point in your space.

In addition to the ways you can incorporate the colour in your home, Greenery shades looks wonderful paired with neutral colours. Pairing Greenery with neutral colours will be very eye-catching. On the other hand it can also be used in unexpectedly colourful ambiences, like hot pink, navy, black, blue will create a bold statement. Therefore, Greenery can be paired with neutrals, brights, deeper shades, pastels and even metallics.

diy do it yourself love seat

DIY: LOVE SEATS

 Do It Yourself Loveseat

Valentines day is around the corner and Born Furniture has an idea to make the day very special. Be productive and make something for you and your loved one. Loveseats have taken the world by storm and what better way to spend time with your loved one than cuddling up together on a seat made specially for you two. This DIY loveseat project is very simple and doesn’t need too many materials, however, it depends on what you want it to look like.

Notably, the colours used is determined by you. You can paint the chairs as you like and the cushions can be upholstered with the fabric of your choice. For this Do it yourself project we suggest a fabric that will illustrate the colours of love but still fits in with your living space.

What you need:

  • Old chairs like dining chairs (preferably with arms)
  • Upholstery fabric (the amount is determined by the size of your seat)
  • Batting (the amount is determined by the size of your seat)
  • Markers
  • Sewing needle and thread
  • High-density foam (the amount will be determined by the size of your seat, the thickness will be determined by your preferences)
  • Wood plank (size is determined by the size of your seat, we suggest a 20mm thickness)
  • Screwdriver
  • Sander with sandpaper
  • Jigsaw
  • Serrated Knife
  • Staple Gun

What to do:

You have to start by removing the seats of the chairs. After the seats have been removed, remove the opposite arm of each chair so when the chairs are placed next to each other only the outside arms remain.  Now it is up to you to decide what finish you want, if you want to paint, varnish or stain it. Once you have decided you should start that process, use a sander on the surface and paint or stain your wood. You can skip this part if you like your chair just as it is. If you want to stain the chairs, apply wood block oil of your choice with a clean cloth and always rub in the direction of the wood grain.

While the oil or paint is penetrating the wood and drying, start working on your seat. Start by measuring one of the old seat cushions front to back and mark this on the wood plank. Furthermore, mark the seat depth on the wood by measuring across the back of the chair. An easy way to measure the seat on the wood is to place the old seat on the wood and trace the outside of the seat onto the wood. Remember to trace the two seats next to each other. Use a jigsaw to cut out the seat, you should cut out a rectangular shape to fill the gap between the chairs when they are placed next to each other. After you have cut the wood you must make sure that it fits on the two chairs.

Now that you have your bench wood place the wood on top of the high-density foam. Trace around the edge with your marker and cut the foam using your cutting tool. Use an adhesive to glue the foam tho the wood. Now for the fun part, spread out your fabric face-down and stack your foam covered seat bench on top. Fold the fabric over the foam and wood, stapling along the edges. If you use a fabric with a geometrical pattern focus on keeping the pattern straight. Once you are done trim the excess fabric.

To attach the cushion to your chairs, place the cushion upside-down on a table and position the chairs on top of the bench. Using a drill, drill pilot holes into the bench by going through the holes on the bottom of the chair and into the bench. Use screws to attach the new bench to the chairs, flip it over and you are done.

Put your cozy cushion upside-down on a table and position your chairs on top of the bench. Drill pilot holes into the bench by going through the holes on the bottom of the chairs and into the wood of the bench. Using the screws you saved from the old seats, attach the new bench to the chairs. Flip the whole thing over and you are done!

Now that you have completed this DIY loveseat project all that is left is to snuggle up with your loved one and enjoy the time together.

how to make your bedroom your sanctuary

How to make your bedroom your sanctuary

Your bedroom sanctuary

Your bedroom should be more than just a place to sleep. It should be your sanctuary, the place you go to at the end of the day to relax and unwind. Don’t you agree?

The first step to a peaceful room is to de-clutter. Keep the area around your bed organised and clean, and avoid unwanted distractions. Furthermore, one of the toughest things to do is to remove any and all digital devices from your room. However, this is a crucial part to create your bedroom sanctuary as these devices gives off a stream of sleep disturbing lights. Use old school alarm clock to wake you up and a good book.

Headboards are some of the latest trends for 2017. Upholstered headboards add layers of texture and it is the most comfortable type of sitting up in bed. Your bedroom sanctuary will be comfortable and stylish at the same time with one of these headboards.

Storage space can be a problem in your bedroom, a bench with a storage unit can be a stylish solution for you. Place a bench at the foot of your bed, it will help pull the room together and in addition, will provide an extra seat.

Furthermore, smaller pieces like throws can be used to create a cozy element of happiness to your bedroom. Likewise, a rug can also be used to add to the cozy ambience as it will be a comfortable spot for your feet to land when you climb of your bed.

Painting your walls with a soothing colour can help create your calming sanctuary. Restful hues in shades of light blues and greens, gray or white will be the perfect addition in your space for a good night’s rest.

Having your own sanctuary is essential and the perfect way to relax and spend some quality alone time. Share your bedroom sanctuary ideas with us.

using your space properly utilising space using space

Love your space

Using your space properly

Creating the perfect living area that is comfortable yet stylish is not a difficult task. However, a living space that is perfectly laid out, comfortable, have enough storage space and is pleasing to the eye, now that sounds hard to accomplish. Luckily, we as Born Furniture is here to show you how easy it can be to use your space properly.

You have to find the right balance in your space, you have to consider the colour you use, the lighting and the design. Colour has everything to do with the ambiance in a room. Choosing the colour for a room is based on the mood you want and how well the light supports that illusion. Using light colours will open a room and create a sense of space and dark colours contract a space. Therefore, use colours that suit your space.

Furthermore, create harmony in your space by considering balance and proportion. Balance the elements in your space, for instance if you have large pieces of artwork on a wall, pair it with a floor lamp on the opposite wall. The proportion of your furniture also should be considered.

Whether you are planning your living space for a new home or just want to change things up a bit, you have to understand the scale of furniture and its relationship to the room. Understanding this can help you create a comfortable and functional space. We can also advise you on the size of your furniture when we help you choose the right pieces for your room

Keep in mind the proportions of your furniture you want it to coordinate with the proportions of the room. Bulky and overstuffed furniture are overwhelmingly comfortable, however if your space is small large furniture will let your space seem overcrowded. Likewise, if your space is large and you use small-scale furniture the furniture will fade in the room. Therefore, use furniture that will suite your space.

Frequently used in most households are sofas. Buy a good-quality sofa that is durable, comfortable and maintains its look. Using a sofa in your living space will vary due to your personal requirements. If you want two sofas and have a large space go for it, if you have a small space and want to use a sofa have a look at all your options. In a small space a sofa can seem quite overpowering as it takes most of your space, and it overs minimal seating. Therefore, use a sofa that fits your space. However, if you struggle to find a sofa suited for you consider love seats, they are lovely small pieces of furniture providing enough extra seating space. Another option is to use a Chaise or a window seat.

To provide extra seating in your space you can add occasional chairs to your space. Additionally, ottomans can also be used. A wonderful advantage of an ottoman is to multi-purpose use, the ottoman provides extra seating, can be used as a table and can be easily stored away once it is no longer needed. In addition it also carries aesthetic value that serves.

In most homes there is always a shortage of storage space. You can either choose to create more storage space or you can buy furniture with a multi purpose. Firstly, you can create more storage space by use the space between the tops of furniture and the ceiling with hanging or high-mounted elements, for example, space above the stove can be filled with kitchen cabinets for extra storage space. Furthermore, you can also build shelves in the open areas in your home or use the space under your staircase as storage units.

Secondly, there is a large variety of multi purpose furniture like a storage unit that can function as an ottoman or table. Another alternative is furniture that can be a sofa by day and a bed by night.

Have some open spaces that you have no idea what to do with? You can fill the space by creating a personal space to relax. Place a comfortable chair in a corner that can be used as extra seating for guests or a reading corner for you to relax in. High-back chairs are perfect for corners, the height of the chairs fills open spaces effortlessly. Another possible solution is to use a table, the table can be used as a desk as well. This will give the space an elegant and calm ambience. As creators of empowering furniture, Born Furniture can manufacture any item according to your required measurements, so filling those empty spaces can be done effortlessly.

Rainbow Cake Recipe

Rainbow Cake Recipe

Planning a Christmas dinner can be a hefty task, especially the dessert. Making something that everyone will enjoy might become daunting because everyone has their preferences. There is traditional foodies and then again you also want to spice things up a bit. We found our bold inspiration in the colours of the rainbow. A colourful delight this Christmas will be a Rainbow Cake. We found a scrumptuous recipe on BBC Good Food, it is sure to bring a bright and colorful delight to the table.

Ingredients

You’ll need 3 x these ingredients for six sponges

  • 125g butter, softened, plus a little extra for greasing
  • 225g plain flour
  • 150g golden caster sugar
  • 3 medium egg (very important to use the correct size)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • edible food colouring – red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, plus optional pink (see below)

For the icing

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 x 250g tubs cream cheese or mascarpone
  • 350g icing sugar
Method
  1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Grease 2 x 20cm round sandwich tins and line the bases with baking parchment. Tip all the sponge ingredients, apart from the food colouring, into a mixing bowl, then beat with an electric whisk until smooth.
  2. Working quickly, weigh the mixture into another bowl to work out the total weight, then weigh exactly half the mixture back into the mixing bowl. Pick 2 of your colours and stir a little into each mix. Keep going until you are happy with the colour – the colour of the batter now will be very similar to the finished cake, so be brave! Scrape the different batters into the tins, trying to spread and smooth as much as possible – but try not to waste a drop of the batter – a rubber spatula will help you. Bake on the same oven shelf for 12 mins until a skewer poked into the middle comes out clean.
  3. Gently turn the cakes out onto a wire rack to cool. Wash the tins and bowls thoroughly, and start again from step 1 – this time using another 2 colours. Unless you’re making the optional pink layer, repeat one more time to get 6 sponges, all of different colours. Leave them all to cool.
  4. To make the icing, very briefly beat the vanilla and cream cheese or mascarpone with an electric whisk until smooth. Sift in the icing sugar and gently fold in with a spatula. Be careful – the more you work it, the runnier it will get, increasing the chance of splitting.
  5. Smear a little icing on your cake stand or plate – just a splodge to stick the first sponge. Start with the red, then spread with some icing right to the very edge. Repeat, sandwiching on top the orange, yellow, green, blue and finally purple sponges. Spread the remaining icing thickly all over the sides and top of the cake.

This colourful dessert is a wonderful adision to your Christmas table and will defenitly be a highlight for the festivities. Share your endresult with us and inspire other families with your bold choise for a festive dessert.

Have a wonderful festive season
